‘Anything is Possible’ – John McAfee’s Wife Responds to False Death Claims

The wife of crypto evangelist and computer programmer John McAfee has responded to a claim by her husband’s ex-girlfriend that he faked his death and was currently in hiding.

John McAfee died in a Spanish prison cell in June 2021 while awaiting extradition to the United States on charges of failing to file tax returns from 2014 to 2018 and failing to report earnings related to pushing crypto projects and consulting work. He was 75 years old when he died, and many in and out of crypto space quickly developed conspiracy theories surrounding his detention and death.

In a Netflix documentary on the life and death of McAfee released Wednesday titled: Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfeeex-girlfriend named Samantha Herrera claimed to have received a call from the computer programmer two weeks after his death:

“I got a call from Texas. “It’s me, John, I’ve paid people off to pretend I’m dead, but I’m not dead. You are alone [the third] person in this world who knows I’m still alive.’ And then he asked me to run away with him.”

Herrera gave no further details in the documentary, but her claims cannot be independently confirmed at this time. Officials in Spain detained McAfee since October 2020, but he was still the subject of many accusations in the United States and abroad. McAfee himself had hinted that he could be targeted by U.S. authorities by posting a photo of a tattoo on his Twitter account in November 2019, claiming, “If I killed myself, I wouldn’t. I was terrified.”

In a statement to Cointelegraph, Janice McAfee said she did not take the claims made in the documentary seriously:

“We’re talking about John McAfee, so anything is possible, but the chances of him being in Texas and being shared with the world in a Netflix documentary are unlikely. Texas is a great place, but John was held in a Spanish jail for trumped-up charges against him from the IRS and SEC, so I doubt he would choose to hide in America.”

“John McAfee’s life has been shrouded in controversy and it is only fitting that his death has also been shrouded in controversy,” added Janice McAfee.

McAfee, whose software company was responsible for a well-known antivirus program that bears his name, often made headlines in the crypto world and the mainstream media. In July 2017, he said that the price of Bitcoin (BTC) would reach $500,000 by 2020, claiming that he “would [his] dick on national television” if the prediction didn’t come true. He ultimately did not make this bet and later said that the price of the crypto assets would be $1 million by 2021.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC, filed a complaint in October 2020 against McAfee and his associate Jimmy Gale Watson, Jr. for allegedly promoting an initial coin offering system. The New York Southern District Court then found Watson guilty and imposed a cumulative fine of approximately $375,000. The SEC later dismissed all claims against McAfee as a result of his death.

During his time in prison from October 2020 until his death in June 2021, McAfee posted regular updates to his Twitter account, initially saying he was “satisfied” with his situation and had friends in prison, in which he wrote the circumstances of his incarceration and the loss of his crypto holdings. Janice McAfee continues to post related news articles and retweets to her husband’s 1.1 million followers.
